American pharmaceutical company Moderna, known for creating an experimental and side effect-riddled Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine, has reached a deal with the Canadian government to build what it claims will be a “state of the art” COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing plant.
The creation of this plant will not only provide Canada with an endless supply of Moderna-made vaccines, but it will also pave the way for the pharmaceutical company to transform the Canadian economy into what is essentially a big pharma-controlled pandemic economy. A major part of the country’s economic activity will be diverted to pay pharmaceutical companies billions for vaccines.
Moderna, based out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, said the factory will be responsible for providing Canada with COVID-19 vaccines. This will include the production of booster doses once the government believes they are necessary. The big pharma company will also be responsible for supplying Canada with vaccines “on an urgent basis” during health emergencies. This means Moderna will be the main supplier of vaccines for future post-vaccine COVID-19 outbreaks in Canada.
Not only that, but if Moderna creates vaccines for other respiratory viruses, Canada will be one of the first countries to get those vaccines if an outbreak occurs.
Canada is doing this because it suffered from repeated delays and supply shortages of COVID-19 vaccines earlier this year. It struggled to obtain the right amount of doses it needed for its population from other countries, including the United States, that were manufacturing them.
The supply situation in Canada got so terrible that the government delayed second doses for people for up to 16 weeks and even advised residents to “mix and match” the vaccines.
“We are excited to expand our presence and continue our long-term collaboration with Canada,” said Patricia Gauthier, the head of Moderna’s operations in Canada, in a statement. “With our industry-leading mRNA technology platform and rapid drug development capabilities, we look forward to being an active participant in Canada’s robust life sciences ecosystem.”
Moderna Chief Executive Officer Stephane Bancel said the factory will be built, owned and operated by Moderna. The factory will likely employ several hundred people.
Bancel said the factory will be similar in size and operation to Moderna’s main manufacturing facility in Norwood, Massachusetts. The main factory currently produces most of the company’s COVID-19 vaccines.
The location of the factory has still not been determined. But once the site is announced, both Moderna and the Canadian government believe construction can be completed by the end of 2024.
It is unclear how much the plant will cost to build. But Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne says Moderna is planning to spend “hundreds of millions of dollars” on the plant.
Champagne added that Canada has already ordered an additional batch of COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna, but he also did not provide any additional details about this.
“We didn’t choose the time of the pandemic, and it’s obvious we won’t choose the next one,” he said. “But there’s one thing we can choose. That’s being better prepared and more resilient.”
Champagne is ignoring the fact that the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are notorious for their side effects. One report revealed that they caused more than 300,000 injuries in just three months.
Bancel said his company is planning to further expand its operations in other countries. He said the company is currently in talks to discuss building similar vaccine manufacturing plants in Europe and Asia, but the CEO refused to be specific and say which countries.
The Moderna CEO said the company could build between five to 10 similar facilities around the world in the coming years.
Canada has become extremely reliant on Moderna and its COVID-19 vaccines in recent months. The creation of this vaccine manufacturing facility will only make the country more dependent on the big pharma company, especially since Canada lacks any local manufacturing ability to produce other COVID-19 vaccines.
